More Camera work

Summer New Media Project, somewhat daily

I got a bit more expirmental with my camera work last week.

more cam testing from Dan’s doodles on Vimeo.

Still needs a bit more work though according to the crits. Also no one likes the eye dropper as the source for the effect, so i’m looking to change that as well.

So I recently got back from the Siggraph convention in LA. I didnt take any pictures while i was there, but I did get some cool stuff. I also learned a lot and had a great time.

The Foundry gave away Nuke and Furnace pins at there nuke user group. This was awesome because it combined, 22 year old Dan’s love for vfx, especially Nuke, and 17 year old dans love of putting pins on things. Also they played Gogol Bordello at the event which 17 year old Dan was all about.

Also I got not one, but two Houdini T-shirts. And version 11 just launched, all super exciting.

These are the two designs that are on the shirts I have. I like the first one the best because noise is the coolest!

Since The last technique seemed fairly effective I decided to try to use it to create the character made out of ink.

I also did a test with controling the flow of fluid looking particles along a curve. The results of that can be seen here:

Summer New Media Project

For new media project this term I plan to create a short effects heavy  animation to hone my skills as a visual effects artist and technical director.

The animation will focus on a glass jar filled with water that has drops of food coloring dropped into it. as the food coloring spreads through out the jar it will reveal or create a man. The man will be beat his fists against the glass trying to escape. The class will crack, and then shatter completely spreading the water and food coloring around the table essentially killing the man.

I was inspired to do this project after seeing this image on an art blog which reminded of my childhood experiences with food coloring ad the great shapes it creates as it diffuses throughout the water:

I found these videos on vimeo of the effect to use as reference. I still need to go out and buy food coloring to shoot some of my own reference footage:

Since my focus for this project is about on the effects  that happen and not the story it self I spent the first week doing some R&D into the motion of the dye. This video shows the results of those studies:

New Media Week one R&D from Dan’s doodles on Vimeo.

The other main effects I’ll need to work out are the dye coming out of the dropper, hitting the water, the breaking of the glass and the splatter of the water at the end. I already have a general idea of how i’m going to go about about all the effects so i’m not too worried, but I’ll be doing tests soon.

While I had originally planed to use the built in Houdini toon character, that bob used last term. However after doing some scale tests with the character in a jar I became worried that the character’s awkward proportions would cause issues.

Instead I’ll be using this character modeled by former DIGM Dave Lally.

Next week I plan to have story boards, a an animatic, and more R&D.
